The Philippine-American War broke out on February 4, 1899, after a skirmish in San Juan. Emilio Aguinaldo lead the revolutionary forces against the American troops. The war took place mostly in the 20th century. One famous general was Antonio Luna, who was known for his strict discipline. The Treaty of Paris, which ended the Spanish-American War, ceded the Philippines to Japan for $20 million. This led to conflict as Filipinos already declared independence in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898. Later, Douglas MacArthur famously promised 'I shall return' after leaving the country during the American colonial period, which happened in 1901.
